London Underground Bakerloo Line

The London Underground Limited (LUL) is responsible for operating the London Underground and owns more than 250 stations. The Bakerloo line is 23.2 km long, carrying more than 125 million passengers per year. It currently runs 1972 stock trains which are the oldest trains in passenger service in Britain.

Challenge

London Underground wanted to modernise the Train Control and Management System (TCMS) and Passenger Information System (PIS)/Public Announcement (PA) system of the 1972 stock trains to meet the customer’s and legislative requirements and to extend the operational life.

The refurbishment project of 252 metro cars extended the fleet’s life up until the fleet’s planned end of life.

Scope

EKE-Electronics provided full turn-key modernising for the Bakerloo line fleet’s TCMS. This included installation design and prototype train installation to help the customer to plan its own works and production.

Solution

The solution contains variety of systems and functionalities that include

  • Turn key Train Control and Management System and application software
  • Brake controller interfaces
  • Event Recorders with Rugged Memory (OTDR)
  • SmartVision condition monitoring
  • PIS/PA system incl. Passenger emergency points and cab-to-cab communication.
