Sydney Waratah Trains

The Sydney Trains, commonly known as the Waratah trains, are double-decker electric multiple units operating across the Sydney Trains network. Delivered through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Downer EDI Rail and Hitachi for Reliance Rail, the initial order of 78 trainsets marked the largest rolling stock procurement in Australia’s history.

Challenge

CRRC Changchun Australia Rail required a Train Control & Management System (TCMS) capable of enabling the development of the world’s first fully Ethernet-based trains for Sydney Trains. The project encompassed a fleet of 79 double-decker EMUs, comprising 632 cars, and classified as A sets.

In December 2016, a follow-up order for 24 additional trains, known as B sets, also known as Sydney Growth Trains or Waratah Series 2 trains, required updated technology to complement the existing fleet.

Project Timeline

A Sets

  • Delivery Start: July 2011
  • Completion: June 2014

B Sets

  • First Order: September 2018 to June 2019
  • Second Order: September 2020 to June 2021
